Hantavirus outbreak reported on cruise ship MV Hondius
A potential hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths and at least five suspected cases. The vessel was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when the medical emergency emerged. According to the World Health Organization, one case has been laboratory-confirmed. One patient is currently in intensive care in South Africa, while medical teams are coordinating the evacuation and care of other affected passengers and crew. The virus, typically transmitted to humans via contact with rodent excreta or inhalation of airborne particles, is undergoing detailed investigation and sequencing. Sources indicate that among the deceased was an elderly couple, and a 69-year-old British passenger is among those hospitalized. WHO officials emphasize that while human-to-human transmission is rare, it is possible, necessitating rigorous monitoring and support for all those on board.
