Hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship MV Hondius
A lethal hantavirus outbreak has occurred on the cruise ship MV Hondius, resulting in three confirmed deaths, including a Dutch couple and a German national. The World Health Organization reported eight suspected cases, with three individuals evacuated in critical condition to the Netherlands. The virus was identified as the Andean strain, which can spread through human-to-human contact. Following a period of being marooned near Cape Verde, the vessel is currently sailing to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where Spanish authorities plan to repatriate non-Spanish passengers and quarantine 14 Spanish citizens. Contact tracing is underway globally for passengers who disembarked earlier, including an individual who died after falling ill on a flight from Johannesburg. The ship operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed that those remaining on board are currently asymptomatic. The Spanish government stated that the vessel's arrival poses no public health risk to the Canary Islands, despite regional opposition.
