Maritime security incidents reported in the Strait of Hormuz

On May 4, 2026, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported security incidents involving vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Initial reports indicated a tanker was struck by unidentified projectiles 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah, UAE, on May 3. A separate report mentioned a bulk carrier being attacked by multiple small boats 11 nautical miles west of Sirik, Iran. No casualties or environmental damage were reported in either event. These incidents occur amid a period of heightened regional tension following the start of the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran on February 28. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of 'Project Freedom', a mission to escort international vessels through the strait. Iranian authorities have rejected the presence of this U.S. naval operation, which aims to facilitate passage through the route that carries one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies.
