Caregiver arrested for assaulting an elderly woman in Chios

A 67-year-old Bulgarian woman has been arrested in Chios, Greece, following allegations of physical abuse against an 82-year-old woman suffering from dementia. The victim's family hired the suspect for 24-hour care, but became concerned after the elderly woman began sleeping up to 20 hours a day. Suspecting the unauthorized administration of medication, the family installed a hidden camera on April 30, 2026. The footage, recorded the following day, allegedly shows the caregiver striking the victim for approximately ten minutes. Upon viewing the recordings, the family notified the police, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect. A forensic medical examination subsequently confirmed the occurrence of physical abuse. This incident follows a similar recent case of elder abuse reported on the island.
