Cypriot candidate detained following alleged assault on referee
A 38-year-old parliamentary candidate from the Active Citizens – Movement of United Cypriot Hunters party was remanded in custody for three days by the Larnaca District Court on Sunday, May 3. The detention follows an investigation into an alleged assault on a referee during a football match between Rotsidis Mammari and APOP in the STOK league. The political movement issued an official statement condemning recent vandalism of its campaign materials and addressing the public scrutiny of its candidate. The party emphasized that the candidate denies all involvement in the incident and maintains the right to the presumption of innocence. While the movement acknowledged the emotional strain of the events, it clarified that it does not condone behavior that falls outside of legal and ethical boundaries. The party leadership stated that any member found violating the principles of justice or law will not be permitted to remain within the movement. Investigations into the match incident are currently ongoing.
