Twins identified with different biological fathers through DNA testing
Michelle and Lavinia Osborne, now 49 years old, discovered through DNA testing that they are half-sisters rather than biological twins. Born in 1976 in Nottingham to a 19-year-old mother, the sisters shared the same womb but resulted from a rare phenomenon known as heteropaternal superfecundation. This occurs when a woman releases more than one egg during the same cycle, which are then fertilized by sperm from different men. Experts note this is an extremely rare occurrence with only about 20 documented cases worldwide. The Osborne sisters are reportedly the only known case of such twins in Britain. The discovery was highlighted on the BBC Radio 4 series 'The Gift' after the women sought answers regarding their family history. While Lavinia expressed shock and a sense of lost certainty, Michelle reported feeling less surprised given their difficult upbringing. Experts suggest that many similar cases likely go undetected unless there is a specific reason to challenge paternity and conduct genetic testing.
