Escalation in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine

On May 5 and 6, 2026, intense cross-border attacks occurred between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian drone strikes were reported in Crimea (Dzhankoy), where five deaths were confirmed by local authorities, and in the Chuvashia region, resulting in two deaths and 32 injuries. Ukraine also attempted a strike on the Kirishi oil refinery in the Leningrad region. Simultaneously, Russia conducted heavy aerial assaults across Ukraine, including attacks on Zaporizhzhia (12 dead), Kramatorsk (3-5 dead), Poltava (four dead), Merefa (four dead), Kherson (two dead in a bus strike), and Odesa. Significant infrastructure damage was reported, including gas disruptions and damaged residential buildings. Russia has proposed a ceasefire for May 9, which Ukraine is currently reviewing. Local officials provided varying casualty counts for several incidents, such as in Kramatorsk, where numbers fluctuated between three and five reported deaths.
