Heavy rains and flooding in northeast Brazil result in six deaths
Over the past 48 hours, extreme rainfall in northeastern Brazil has caused flooding and landslides, resulting in at least six deaths. In the state of Pernambuco, two people died in Recife and two in Olinda, with approximately 1,500 residents displaced. In the state of Paraiba, two additional deaths occurred, and roughly 1,800 people were displaced or left homeless, specifically affecting Joao Pessoa, Conde, and Campina Grande. While some external reports initially cited four deaths, the Brazilian Ministry of Integration and Regional Development confirmed a total of six fatalities. The National Center for Risk and Disaster Management issued 22 alerts and raised the operational status to maximum alert level. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has engaged with local authorities to provide federal support. Although the intensity of the rainfall has decreased, authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant through Saturday.
