Chicago police officer killed by suspect in hospital
On April 25, 2026, 38-year-old Chicago police officer John G. Bartholomew was killed while guarding 26-year-old suspect Alfonso Talley at a local hospital. Talley had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a shop employee. During the encounter, Talley claimed he had ingested drugs and was experiencing breathing difficulties. He then reportedly produced a firearm and shot Officer Bartholomew and his 57-year-old partner. Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the force, died from his injuries, while his partner remains in critical condition. Following the shooting, Talley fled the scene but was apprehended by police shortly after. The suspect has a documented criminal history involving armed robbery, vehicle theft, and assaulting a police officer. Bartholomew is survived by his wife, Renee, and their three children.
