Chicago police officer killed by suspect in hospital

On April 25, 2026, 38-year-old Chicago police officer John G. Bartholomew was killed while guarding 26-year-old suspect Alfonso Talley at a local hospital. Talley had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a shop employee. During the encounter, Talley claimed he had ingested drugs and was experiencing breathing difficulties. He then reportedly produced a firearm and shot Officer Bartholomew and his 57-year-old partner. Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the force, died from his injuries, while his partner remains in critical condition. Following the shooting, Talley fled the scene but was apprehended by police shortly after.
