Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi hospitalized in unstable condition

Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, was urgently transferred from prison to a hospital in Zanjan, Iran, on May 1. Her family's foundation reported a catastrophic deterioration of her health, citing two episodes of unconsciousness and a severe cardiac crisis. Mohammadi, who is in her 50s, remains in an unstable condition requiring oxygen, according to her family. Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, stated that her life is at risk and that local hospital facilities are inadequate for her specialized medical needs. The Norwegian Nobel Committee and her family have urged Iranian authorities to permit her transfer to Tehran for treatment by her long-term medical team. Mohammadi was previously sentenced to 7.5 years in prison following her arrest in December, when she protested the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. The family emphasizes that she requires at least one month of specialized care outside of prison conditions to recover.
