Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi hospitalized after health decline in Iranian prison
Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, has been transferred to a hospital in Zanjan, Iran, following a severe deterioration of her health. Her family foundation reports that she experienced multiple episodes of loss of consciousness and a cardiac crisis while incarcerated. Prison authorities reportedly deemed her condition unmanageable on-site, leading to the emergency transfer. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has expressed grave concern and called for her immediate release and access to specialized medical treatment in Tehran. Mohammadi, currently in her 50s, is serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for her advocacy against the death penalty and for women's rights. She was arrested in December following remarks regarding the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. The foundation notes she remains in an unstable condition requiring oxygen therapy, while calling for specialized care outside the current facility.
