AKEL criticizes President Christodoulides following May Day demonstrations
Following May Day demonstrations, the political party AKEL issued a statement challenging President Nikos Christodoulides' recent claims regarding his support for workers and pensioners. While the President highlighted increases in minimum wages and pensions, AKEL argued these measures are insufficient. The party cited Eurostat data indicating that 167,000 people in Cyprus were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2025, representing an increase of 3,000 individuals since 2024. AKEL further noted that the national minimum wage currently stands at 55% of the median, falling short of the 60% European Union target. Additionally, the party criticized the government for delaying the implementation of an EU directive aimed at ensuring at least 80% of workers are covered by collective agreements. This directive was required to be incorporated into national law by November 15, 2024. AKEL described the mass May Day marches as a public response to the government's perceived failure to address these labor issues. The government has maintained its position on its commitment to social support, while the opposition labels the official rhetoric as lacking substantial impact.
