Residential building in Larnaca facing potential evacuation due to structural concerns
Authorities in Larnaca are evaluating the structural integrity of a large apartment complex housing approximately 500 residents. The building hosts a mix of local and foreign tenants, as well as units utilized for short-term rentals like Airbnb. Angelos Hatzicharalambous, President of the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization (EOA), confirmed that a preliminary assessment identified safety concerns, but an official report from an independent private expert is pending. Final decisions regarding an evacuation will be made within the next few days based on this technical report. Beyond this specific site, there are 2-3 other high-risk buildings in Larnaca and 565 structures categorized as dangerous across the district. Similar issues persist in Limassol, where EOA President Yiannis Tsouloftas noted that eviction proceedings have been initiated for one residential complex after tenants failed to meet compliance deadlines. The legal process for forced evacuations remains complex, balancing public safety with the significant social challenge of finding housing for displaced individuals.
