Building safety concerns rise in Limassol and Larnaca
On Sunday, concrete and plaster fell from a designated dangerous building on Makariou Avenue in Limassol, prompting the local District Local Government Organisation (EOA) to fence off the area. While residents have evacuated the upper floors, a ground-floor shop remains occupied, and the EOA is seeking a court order for complete evacuation. This 1956 building is subject to ongoing legal disputes between the owners and a tenant. Simultaneously, in Larnaca, a large apartment block housing approximately 500 residents faces a potential evacuation pending a structural report from a private engineer. EOA Larnaca president Angelos Hadjicharalambous emphasized that formal evacuation procedures will follow if the report confirms the building is unsafe. The Larnaca building hosts local residents, foreigners, and Airbnb rentals, complicating the search for alternative housing. Authorities in both cities are currently monitoring several high-risk buildings to address structural safety while balancing social impact.
