United States to impose 25% tariffs on European automotive imports

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25% starting next week. The President justified the measure by claiming the European Union has failed to adhere to an existing trade agreement. According to the announcement, vehicles manufactured within U.S. factory facilities will remain exempt from these new tariffs. Trump highlighted ongoing automotive investments in the U.S. exceeding $100 billion as a key economic milestone. Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade, condemned the decision, labeling the U.S. an unreliable trade partner. Lange asserted that the EU has been upholding a framework agreement reached in Scotland, while accusing the U.S. of violating terms regarding steel and aluminum products. In separate remarks, Trump also discussed the possibility of withdrawing U.S. troops from Italy and Spain as part of a broader review of military commitments. The dispute remains centered on conflicting interpretations of bilateral trade compliance.
