AKEL general secretary addresses May Day event in Nicosia
On Friday, the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, addressed a May Day event organized by the PEO trade union at Eleftherias Square in Nicosia. Stefanou emphasized the historical struggles of Cypriot workers and the importance of defending labor rights against policies that prioritize profits over human well-being. He highlighted key achievements such as the eight-hour workday, collective agreements, and the cost-of-living allowance (ATA) as hard-won victories. The speaker warned that current societal pressures, including rising living costs and housing expenses, make the protection of these rights more urgent than ever. Additionally, he framed the event as a call to strengthen the political influence of AKEL ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Stefanou further criticized the sacrifice of peace for the interests of powerful groups. The event served both as a commemoration of international workers' unity and as a platform for current political campaigning.
