Police interventions and arrests during May Day demonstrations in Istanbul

On May Day, authorities in Istanbul implemented strict security measures, including the closure of Taksim Square and the suspension of metro lines in areas such as Taksim and Sishane. Access to districts like Pera, Sisli, and Besiktas was restricted by police. Protesters attempted to reach Taksim Square from locations including Besiktas and Mecidiyekoy, leading to police interventions using tear gas. According to the Association of Contemporary Lawyers, approximately 120 people were detained, including trade unionists and political organization members. Trade unionist Basaran Aksu was among those taken into custody while protesting the blockade of the square. Additionally, 40 individuals were arrested during a separate march on the Bosphorus Bridge. While events in other parts of Turkey were reported as more peaceful, the Istanbul demonstrations were marked by significant police presence and confrontations. Authorities justified the measures as necessary for security.
