Cyprus labor ministry outlines 2026 reform priorities
On May 1, 2026, Cyprus Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Marinos Mousiouttas announced that the primary objectives for the year include the completion of pension reform, improvement of working conditions, and strengthening of social protection. In a statement marking Labor Day, the Minister highlighted that these goals are part of a broader government effort to enhance citizen services and ensure social cohesion. Mousiouttas cited past government measures, such as the increase of the National Minimum Wage and the restoration of the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), as evidence of their labor-focused policy. Regarding international efforts, he noted that Cyprus is utilizing its presidency of the Council of the European Union to advocate for fair working practices and social justice. A significant development mentioned is the political agreement to revise the regulations for coordinating social security systems following a decade of stagnation. Despite these advancements, the Minister acknowledged persistent challenges, specifically inflation, the necessity for robust collective bargaining agreements, and the requirement for continuous improvements in workplace safety. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ongoing social dialogue to achieve these outcomes.
