Appeals court upholds conviction in assault and threat case
The Appellate Court of Cyprus has upheld the guilty verdict against a man for assaulting and threatening his ex-wife. The case originated from incidents occurring in February 2020. Initially, the Famagusta District Court found the defendant guilty on three charges, including assault, causing a public disturbance, and making threats, while acquitting him of one additional public order charge. The original sentence included a four-month prison term for assault, a five-month term for threats, and a 100 euro fine for public disturbance. These prison sentences were suspended for a period of three years. The defendant appealed the decision, raising eight grounds of appeal and arguing that the district court had incorrectly evaluated witness testimony. The Appellate Court dismissed the appeal as unfounded, stating that the district court's evaluation of evidence was complete and reasonable. The court reaffirmed that the original ruling was based on a sound assessment of the testimonies provided by all parties involved.
