Government spokesperson comments on ongoing investigations
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the executive branch does not have access to the contents of the police deposition concerning the individual known as 'Santi'. He emphasized that in a functioning state, the government should not interfere with or be informed about the specifics of ongoing independent investigations. Regarding the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report on allegations of a 'mafia state', Letymbiotis reiterated that the Authority acts independently and the government will only review findings after their official publication. Addressing calls from AKEL for the reopening of the 'black van' case, he dismissed political pressure, stating that the government respects the autonomy of institutions. He noted that while he understands the heightened political atmosphere, stakeholders must remain consistent in their respect for institutional independence. The spokesperson confirmed that official procedures regarding these cases will be followed strictly. He declined to disclose whether the President had responded to a letter from the General Secretary of AKEL sent on April 2, focusing instead on the need for political consistency.
