Cyprus allocates 1 million euros for genetic identification of missing persons

On April 21, 2026, the Cyprus Council of Ministers approved a budget of 1 million euros to facilitate advanced genetic testing for identifying remains of missing persons. This initiative utilizes Massively Parallel Sequencing technology to analyze bones that were previously impossible to identify due to contamination by chemical substances. These chemicals were applied in the past either for preservation or odor control. The project will be carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. Commissioner for the Presidency Marios Hartsiotis announced that the process is scheduled to commence in May. The government stated that this decision serves as a humanitarian effort to provide closure to the families of those missing. The initiative was strongly supported by President Nikos Christodoulides.
