Overcrowding crisis reported at Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital
The Mental Health Nursing Staff branch of the PASYDY union has reported critical overcrowding at Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital, noting that patients are forced to sleep on mattresses on the floor. Although bed capacity was increased from 20 to 30 in buildings designed for fewer occupants, nursing staff state that the situation has significantly deteriorated. The union claims that modern infrastructure cannot safely support this number of patients and warned that current conditions jeopardize the safety and dignity of those receiving care. PASYDY further alleges that the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) has failed to take meaningful action or consult with staff over the last two months. Conversely, the management of OKYPY and Athalassa Hospital stated that all patients currently have beds. Officials attributed the overcrowding to mandatory hospitalisation warrants issued by the police and indicated that decongestion measures are expected to be completed by the end of May 2026.
