Andros Kyprianou denies role in appointment of Attorney General George Savvidis

Former AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou has publicly denied allegations made by Makarios Drousiotis and Averof Neofytou suggesting that he proposed George Savvidis for the position of Attorney General. Kyprianou stated that Drousiotis's claim, which alleged that Myron Nikolatos suggested Savvidis to him, is false. He emphasized that the appointment of independent officials is the exclusive right of the President of the Republic. Kyprianou noted that AKEL had historically opposed the appointment of Ionas Nikolaou to the same post. In 2019, he introduced a legislative proposal to prevent the President from appointing high-ranking party officials or former ministers to the Attorney General position, but the proposal was rejected by other parties. Kyprianou stated that he communicated AKEL's formal opposition to the potential appointment of Nikolaou directly to former President Nicos Anastasiades. He further asserted that the suggestion of a political favor regarding Savvidis's appointment is untrue, citing the intense political confrontation between AKEL and Anastasiades at the time over corruption and the Cyprus issue.
