Cyprus labor unions issue May Day 2026 statements on economic and social challenges

On the occasion of May Day 2026, the SEK and PEO labor unions in Cyprus released statements addressing current socioeconomic and geopolitical challenges. Despite positive national economic growth, both organizations emphasized that households continue to face significant financial strain due to high costs in housing, energy, and essential goods. SEK prioritized the expansion of collective bargaining agreements to cover 80% of workers, the universal application of the Cost of Living Allowance (ATA) in the private sector, and pension reforms ensuring sustainable income above the poverty line. Furthermore, SEK expressed opposition to labor market deregulation policies reminiscent of the Bolkenstein Directive and highlighted its role during Cyprus's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. PEO centered its message on a call for peace, the termination of international conflicts, and the reunification of Cyprus based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation. PEO also demanded the abolition of the 12% pension penalty, the removal of double taxation on fuel and energy, and increased social benefits. Both unions advocated for workers' dignity, wage increases, and the protection of labor rights against exploitation.
