SEK union calls for labor reforms on May Day 2026
On the occasion of May Day 2026, the SEK union issued a declaration calling for improved labor rights and social cohesion. Despite the positive performance of the Cypriot economy, the union reports that workers face significant pressure from rising costs of living, particularly in housing and energy. SEK identifies the primary economic threats as the loss of purchasing power, profiteering, and delays in green and digital transitions. As Cyprus assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2026, the union intends to advocate for policies that protect labor rights. Key policy priorities include expanding collective bargaining agreements to cover 80% of the workforce and implementing the Cost of Living Allowance (ATA) universally in the private sector. Additionally, the union demands pension reforms to ensure sustainability, the regulation of foreign labor, and a zero-tolerance policy regarding workplace violence and harassment. SEK explicitly opposes labor market deregulation policies reminiscent of the Bolkenstein directive.
