Arrest made following drone delivery of contraband to central prisons
Police have arrested a 37-year-old Nicosia resident in connection with the smuggling of contraband into the Central Prisons via a drone. The incident occurred last Monday, when a drone dropped three mobile phones and three chargers, all concealed inside a ball, into a prison wing courtyard. The delivery was detected by a newly installed anti-drone system that had been operational for only 48 hours. Prison guards secured the dropped items immediately following the alert. Using tracking data provided by the anti-drone system, Nicosia CID investigators identified a suspect and executed an arrest warrant. Authorities are currently conducting searches to secure further evidence and are analyzing the serial numbers of the recovered mobile phones. The suspect is expected to be interrogated, after which police will decide whether to bring him before a court to request detention. Investigations regarding potential accomplices and mobile phone vendors are ongoing.
