Seminar on preventing sexual abuse in sports for physical education teachers
On April 26, 2026, a seminar titled 'Training of Secondary Education Physical Education Teachers for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse in Sports' was held at the Latsia Lyceum. The event was organized by the Pedagogical Institute in collaboration with the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA), the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, and the Educational Psychology Service. Kallie Hatziiosif, Vice President of the KOA, noted that the organization has prioritized this issue, leading to the Council of Ministers' approval of the Action Plan for Healthy Sport. The initiative highlights Cyprus's role in implementing the 'Start to Talk' program, which has transitioned from an awareness project into a policy application tool for sports federations. Training sessions under this program have provided practical instructions for Safeguarding Officers led by international experts. KOA official Stefani Wheeler addressed the mandatory procedures that sports organizations must implement to ensure child protection. The seminar is part of a national effort to combat sexual abuse against children.
