European Commission adopts temporary state aid framework due to Middle East crisis
The European Commission, led by Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, has introduced the Middle East Crisis Temporary Framework (METSAF) to support EU member states affected by the current regional instability. This measure allows governments to provide direct financial assistance to vulnerable sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, transport, and energy-intensive industries. The framework remains effective until December 31, 2026, and is subject to periodic review based on regional developments and economic conditions. Member states may compensate businesses for up to 70% of additional costs incurred from rising fuel and fertilizer prices, using historical price benchmarks. Furthermore, energy-intensive industries may receive support covering up to 70% of electricity costs for 50% of their total consumption. Smaller businesses can benefit from a simplified aid option, capping individual grants at 50,000 euros. All aid measures must be notified to the European Commission for rapid approval on a case-by-case basis. The initiative aims to prevent irreversible economic damage while maintaining the long-term goal of a transition to a clean economy.
