Cyprus and France to sign Status of Forces Agreement by June 2026
President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that Cyprus and France will sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) in June 2026 to facilitate the presence of French forces on the island for humanitarian purposes. This agreement follows a broader strategic partnership established in Paris in December 2023, covering defense, energy, and security. The Cypriot government describes the move as a deepening of bilateral cooperation, particularly in light of recent regional tensions and a reported drone strike. In contrast, the administration in the Turkish-occupied north, led by Unal Ustel, has condemned the move as provocative and null and void. Turkish Cypriot officials argue that the agreement disrupts the balance of power and requires the consent of their community. French President Emmanuel Macron previously emphasized a commitment to Cyprus's security following regional escalations. The agreement is part of a larger cooperation framework set to run from 2026 to 2030.
