University of Nicosia opens new campus in Athens

On April 30, 2026, the University of Nicosia officially inaugurated its new branch campus located in the municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli, Athens. The ceremony was attended by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, both of whom delivered speeches. President Christodoulides, accompanied by Education Minister Athena Michaelidou and government officials, highlighted the university's growth to approximately 14,000 students from 100 countries. Prime Minister Mitsotakis praised the institution for meeting high standards and reiterated his government's goal of facilitating the operation of up to 10 private university branches in Greece. Mitsotakis further used the event to advocate for the revision of Article 16 of the Greek Constitution, which currently mandates state-provided education, to remove legal uncertainties for private academic institutions. The Cypriot President noted that higher education is a key economic sector for Cyprus, which currently hosts about 40,000 foreign students.
