Manfred Weber advocates for clear rules on Article 42.7 in the EU parliament
During a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, European People's Party (EPP) President Manfred Weber addressed the necessity of Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union. This article serves as the mutual assistance clause, which Weber described as the military dimension of European solidarity. Weber expressed his support for the initiative of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to bring the application of this article to the forefront of EU discussions. He emphasized that the current global uncertainty, particularly concerning the situation in Cyprus, demands a decisive response from the European Union. Weber called for the establishment of clear rules for the practical implementation of Article 42.7. Additionally, he highlighted the recent creation of a dedicated Defense Commissioner position and the growing push for a formal Defense Committee within the European Parliament. He concluded by asserting that the EU must now take the necessary next steps to strengthen its defense framework.
