89-year-old man arrested following shooting attacks in Athens

On Tuesday, an 89-year-old man carried out shooting attacks at two locations in Athens, resulting in five injuries. The suspect first fired a shotgun at an EFKA social security office, wounding an employee in the leg, before traveling by taxi to a court building to wound four female clerks. The man was subsequently arrested at a hotel in Patras, 200 kilometers away. His lawyer, Vassilis Noulezas, described the incident as an act of protest and despair following the rejection of his supplementary pension application. While the lawyer stated the suspect was a former engineer who worked in Chicago, other media reports identified him as a local garbage collector. Prosecutors have charged him with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis acknowledged security gaps at public buildings, while EFKA employees staged a walkout to demand better safety protocols.
