PASYDY seeks conversion of temporary public sector workers to permanent status
The General Secretary of the civil servants' union PASYDY, Mr. Matthaiou, announced a formal initiative to convert fixed-term public sector employees (EOX) into indefinite-term employees (EAX). The proposal targets all workers with at least 30 months of service, whether continuous or intermittent, regardless of their specific contract type. The union has already submitted this request to the Ministry of Finance, which has acknowledged the issue and requested data on the affected individuals. PASYDY estimates that approximately 1,500 employees across Cyprus may be eligible for this transition. The union is currently conducting a mapping exercise to verify the exact number of workers involved and has encouraged employees to join the organization to strengthen its bargaining power. Mr. Matthaiou indicated that court rulings supporting such conversions may be used during negotiations with the government. The initiative aims to provide job security and professional stability for temporary staff in the public service.
