Cyprus defense minister outlines plans for technological innovation in national security

On Wednesday, Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas addressed a conference on research and innovation in the defence sector, highlighting the role of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and cyber defence. He stated that Cyprus aims to integrate its domestic defence industry into the European and international sectors to enhance the National Guard’s effectiveness. The government is focusing on two main pillars: strengthening national cooperation through state funding and increasing participation in EU programmes such as the European Defence Fund. The minister noted that specific projects like 'Theseus', 'DRON-eye', and 'ATHENA-2019' have received €900,000 in funding. Additionally, six national research projects focusing on dual-use technologies have been completed with a budget of €3 million. Cyprus is currently collaborating with the consultant firm Expertise France to draft a comprehensive defence industry strategy. These efforts are intended to secure supply chains and ensure long-term technological readiness for the country.
