Court rejects preliminary objections in Thanasis Nicolaou case
The Limassol Criminal Court has rejected as premature the preliminary objections raised by the defence in the private criminal prosecution regarding the death of Thanasis Nicolaou. The five defendants, including former state pathologist Panikos Stavrianos and four senior police officials—Andreas Iatropoulos, Nikos Sofokleous, Christakis Nathanael, and Christakis Kapiliotis—face 38 charges related to alleged professional misconduct. Defence lawyers argued that the indictment is defective, claiming it lacks sufficient detail and includes a non-existent criminal offence in the 25th charge. They requested that the court amend or annul the indictment, citing a lack of clarity in defining the alleged duties of their clients. The lawyers for the Nicolaou family reserved their right to respond to these claims at a later stage. Consequently, the defendants have not yet entered pleas regarding the charges. The court has adjourned the proceedings until May 7, emphasizing the need to avoid further delays in the trial process.
