Elam removes Paphos candidate Kyriakos Savvas from electoral list
The National Popular Front (ELAM) has officially removed Kyriakos Savvas from its Paphos electoral ballot ahead of the May 24 elections. Party leader Christos Christou stated that the unanimous decision by the politburo was based on disciplinary issues rather than ideological disagreements. The party alleged that Savvas repeatedly ignored warnings regarding his public actions and personal agenda, which included prominent support for the suspended Bishop Tychikos. Specifically, Savvas participated in protest demonstrations related to the Church hierarchy and made social media posts criticizing same-sex unions in Cyprus. Savvas, a municipal councillor, has rejected the allegations of disciplinary offences and multiple warnings, demanding that the party produce a specific timeline and evidence. He claims his removal followed his active involvement in protests on April 20 and 26. While ELAM maintains it agrees with his stance on LGBT issues, it asserts that Savvas exposed the party by acting independently on sensitive religious and social matters. The dispute has prompted a public exchange of statements between the candidate and the party leadership.
