Cyprus dam water levels see significant increase in 2026
Water reserves in Cyprus experienced a notable improvement during March and April 2026, marking some of the highest inflows in nearly four decades. Data from the Water Development Department indicates that March saw the highest monthly inflow on record since 1987, with April being the second-best in 38 years. Total storage across the island's dams currently stands at approximately 37.9% to 38.8% of total capacity, a substantial increase from the 23.2% to 23.6% recorded during the same period last year. Between April 14 and 20, inflows reached 4.046 million cubic metres against 0.371 million cubic metres in outflows. Specific reservoirs show varying performance levels, with the Kouris Dam at 35.9% capacity, the Asprokremmos Dam at 38.6%, and the Kannaviou Dam reaching 48.4%. Despite these gains, the Water Development Department cautions that current levels remain insufficient to meet all long-term drinking-water and irrigation demands. Officials emphasize that this positive hydrological trend should not lead to public complacency.
