Cyprus accelerates energy plans amid regional developments
President Nikos Christodoulides announced that Cyprus is accelerating its energy plans in cooperation with Chevron, Eni, and Total, citing the growing geostrategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean. During a meeting on Wednesday with a Chevron delegation led by Javier La Rosa, the President stated that internal processes concerning the Aphrodite gas field in Block 12, involving partners NewMed Energy and BG Group, are nearing completion. The government expects to finalize internal procedures and make cabinet decisions in the coming weeks to support natural gas commercialization and regional exports. Regarding Turkey's recent statements about research activities in the region, Christodoulides noted that Cyprus continues to act in accordance with international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Additionally, the President mentioned that interest from companies in new exploration blocks within the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone is increasing. These energy initiatives are framed as vital for the European Union's energy security, diversification, and autonomy. Reports also indicated a temporary rise in Brent crude prices following concerns over potential US actions regarding Iranian oil transit.
