AKEL MEP demands reopening of the Cyprus surveillance van case

On Wednesday, AKEL Member of the European Parliament Giorgos Georgiou addressed the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg regarding the 2025 European Commission Rule of Law Report. During his speech, Georgiou formally requested the reopening of the investigation into the so-called 'black van' surveillance case in Cyprus. He characterized the previous closure of the investigation as opaque and suggested that it may have been intended to conceal corruption and collusion. The MEP argued that the persistence of such cases undermines the rule of law within the European Union. He drew parallels between the Cyprus case and other surveillance controversies, such as the use of the Predator software in Greece and the Pegasus spyware scandal. Georgiou emphasized that justice must operate independently and effectively, calling for clearer measures and accountability. He further warned that political figures and media are currently facing excessive pressure and monitoring, which threatens fundamental rights.
