EAC desalination plant revenue and expansion plans
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has generated over €169 million from its Vasiliko desalination plant since operations began in 2013. The facility, which cost over €45.6 million to construct, experienced initial delays due to the 2011 Mari naval base explosion. Annual revenue has shown an upward trend, peaking at €25.7 million in 2024, compared to the initial €2.8 million in 2013. With 2025 estimates included, total revenue is expected to approach €200 million. The plant currently processes 60,000 cubic meters of water per day, and a decision has been made to increase capacity by 20,000 cubic meters. EAC unions are further advocating for additional projects, including a proposed 60,000-tonne capacity unit at Moni. Reports indicate that these operations reached full capacity in recent years, significantly contributing to the authority's financial results.
