Cyprus extends deadline for terrestrial digital television transition to July 1st
The Department of Electronic Communications of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy has extended the deadline for the transition to the DVB-T2 digital television standard until July 1st. This upgrade replaces the previous DVB-T platform, which operated for 15 years, following a tender process for the 2025–2040 period. The move aims to improve image and sound quality to HD and 4K standards while enabling more channels and more efficient use of the frequency spectrum. Viewers with televisions manufactured after 2017 typically only need to perform a channel rescan to access the new signal. Those with older devices must either purchase a DVB-T2 decoder, costing approximately 20 to 50 euros, or replace their television set. The change exclusively affects viewers receiving signals via antenna, while cable and satellite platforms, as well as RIK channels, remain unaffected. Authorities stated that the extension was granted to allow citizens sufficient time to upgrade equipment without causing public inconvenience or market congestion.
