Nicosia hosts informal EU ministerial meetings on transport and maritime policy

On Wednesday, Nicosia hosted informal meetings of EU transport and maritime ministers as part of the 2026 Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis chaired the transport session at the Filoxenia Conference Center, where officials discussed increasing European autonomy and connectivity through railways and ports. The discussions also addressed geopolitical challenges and rising energy costs, with a focus on making logistics more competitive. During the second part of the day, Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanoli presided over the informal meeting on maritime transport. Ministers are scheduled to sign the 'Nicosia Declaration,' which focuses on seafarers' welfare, training, and the promotion of gender equality in the sector. Prior to these meetings, Minister Vafeadis met with the European Transport Workers' Federation to address safety standards and social rights within the transport industry. These efforts reflect Cyprus's strategic role as a transport hub within the region.
