Mediterranean fisheries ministers to meet in Cyprus to discuss marine conservation
Under the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the European Union, Mediterranean fisheries ministers are scheduled to convene in Cyprus this May. The meeting, led by Commissioner Costas Kadis, aims to establish a new vision for regional fisheries as part of the MedFish4Ever ministerial declaration. The region faces significant environmental challenges, including rising sea temperatures at rates two to three times the global average and widespread overexploitation of fish stocks. Additionally, invasive species are impacting ecosystems across the Eastern Mediterranean. A primary proposal for discussion is a science-based policy for 2026 to shift the regional ban on bottom trawling from 1,000 meters to 800 meters. Proponents argue this measure is necessary for regional resilience and food security. The decision follows positive background studies and seeks to enhance protection for deep-sea habitats. These discussions emphasize the shift of marine environmental policy from a technical concern to a major political priority.
