European Parliament approves MFF 2028-2034 position and 2027 operational budget
The European Parliament has formally adopted its position on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2028-2034 with 370 votes in favor, 201 against, and 84 abstentions. President Roberta Metsola urged the Council to begin negotiations immediately, emphasizing the need for a crisis-resilient budget that prioritizes defense, security, and competitiveness. Metsola stated that the EU cannot face modern challenges with an outdated budget and asserted that future generations should not bear past debts. Separately, on April 27, 2026, the Parliament's Committee on Budgets approved the 2027 operational budget for the institution, totaling 2.6 billion euros. This decision, supported by 85% of committee members, was led by rapporteur Michalis Hatzipantelas. The 2027 budget focuses on cybersecurity, digital transition, and green initiatives to improve institutional efficiency. Hatzipantelas also serves as rapporteur for the administrative budgets of other EU institutions for 2027. The operational budget estimates will now proceed to the plenary for final voting.
