Deployment of smart water meters in Cyprus districts

The District Organizations for Local Self-Government (EOA) in Larnaca and Nicosia are implementing the installation of smart water meters to modernize water management. The EOA of Larnaca has already installed 17,000 units and expects to complete the installation of 25,000 meters by June 2026. These meters will monitor hourly consumption and detect leaks in areas including Livadia, Aradippou, and parts of the Larnaca tourist zone. Concurrently, the EOA of Nicosia plans to deploy 72,000 smart meters across its jurisdiction. These devices will be connected via Cyta's low-intensity network to provide real-time data to both the organization and consumers. Customers will receive SMS alerts regarding unusual consumption patterns, helping them address leaks promptly and avoid high bills. This shift replaces the current system, where manual meter readings occur every two months, often resulting in delayed discovery of water loss. The initiative aims to reduce resource waste and optimize the overall operation of the water networks.
