Tensions rise over Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road project development
The Democratic Rally (DISY) party has publicly criticized the former Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides, for his past interventions regarding the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road project. DISY claims that Michaelides' focus on accounting criteria and his attempts to block funding by labeling the project a scandal caused significant construction delays and cost increases. The party emphasizes that the road is vital for regional safety, development, and connectivity. Separately, a live television debate on the show 'Aixmes' between Drouseia Deputy Mayor Sotiris Koupparis and Members of Parliament Chrysanthos Savvides (DIKO) and Valentinos Fakontis (AKEL) escalated into a verbal confrontation. Koupparis accused the local MPs of failing to pressure the government effectively, leading to an heated argument that forced the presenter to suspend the broadcast. Disagreements also surfaced during the discussion regarding the design specifications of the road, specifically concerning whether it should be a two-lane or four-lane highway. The project, which has been under consideration since the late 1990s, remains a contentious issue in local politics.
