Archaeologists use AI to reconstruct Pompeii victim's final moments

Archaeologists at the Pompeii Archaeological Park, in collaboration with the University of Padua, have used artificial intelligence to reconstruct the appearance of a man who died during the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The victim was discovered near the Porta Stabia necropolis, just outside the city walls, alongside another individual. Researchers believe the man was attempting to escape towards the sea when he was killed by falling volcanic rocks during the second day of the eruption. He was found holding a terracotta mortar, likely used as makeshift protection for his head, along with an oil lamp, an iron ring, and 10 bronze coins. The AI reconstruction displays the man in his final moments with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, head of the archaeological park, stated that AI can provide new impetus for classical studies. Pompeii, located southeast of Naples, remains a vital site for historical research with 4.3 million visitors in 2024.
