89-year-old man arrested after armed attacks on EFKA and Athens court
On April 28, an 89-year-old man armed with a hunting shotgun opened fire at the EFKA office in Kerameikos and the Court of First Instance on Loukareos Street in Athens, injuring five people. The suspect was later arrested in Patras after traveling there by taxi. Facing three felonies and six misdemeanors, including attempted serial homicide, he has been remanded in custody by an investigating judge. In his testimony, the defendant claimed the attacks were acts of desperation due to long-standing grievances, stating he intended only to cause a public disturbance and not to kill. His lawyer, Vasilis Noulezas, stated the suspect expressed remorse and offered 2,000 euros in compensation to each of the injured. While the suspect cited personal frustration, media reports also referenced claims from his daughter alleging historical abusive behavior. The incident prompted a nationwide suspension of court operations as judicial unions demanded immediate improvements to security. The defendant requested a psychiatric evaluation, while legal proceedings continue regarding the charges.
