Mayor of Lefkara reports illegal encroachment on government land in Kornos
Sofoklis Sofokleous, the Mayor of Lefkara, has reported the long-standing illegal encroachment of state-owned land in the village of Kornos. According to the Mayor, private individuals have built unauthorized luxury villas, smaller houses, and temporary structures on government property, which accounts for approximately 70% of the community's land. The illegal use of these hundreds of plots, valued at millions of euros, has allegedly continued for decades with state tolerance. Mr. Sofokleous has formally requested that the Department of Lands and Surveys conduct an inventory of all such encroachments. He has held two meetings with the Larnaca district official to address the issue. The Mayor advocates for a formal recording of these structures and the subsequent legalization of those eligible through the payment of prescribed fees. He emphasized that the structures involve more than five or six cases and represent significant unauthorized development on public land.
