Pafos municipality faces unexpected 400,000 euro debt related to waste management
The Municipality of Pafos has been notified of an outstanding debt amounting to approximately 400,000 euros related to the operation of the regional Sanitary Landfill Site (XYTA). Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou was informed by the Paphos Provincial Organization of Self-Government (EOA) that the payment is urgent to ensure the continued functionality of the facility. The debt reportedly stems from the past decade and is linked to legal proceedings involving the company Helector. This financial obligation was not included in the current municipal budget, creating significant administrative challenges. Angelos Onisiforou has officially requested that the Auditor General of the Republic, Andreas Papakonstantinou, conduct an investigation into the origins of the debt. Reports indicate that during the period when the debt was accrued, the current suspended Mayor, Faidonas Faidonos, was serving as the chairman of the board for the landfill site. The Audit Office is currently conducting broader reviews of the municipality's finances. This situation has prompted concerns regarding transparency and fiscal management within the local administration.
